Suicide Prevention Month, observed each year in September, is a vital time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and equip people with the tools they need to support those who may be struggling. Suicide remains a serious public health issue. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the United States, there are approximately 129 suicides each day, and for every suicide death, it's estimated that 25 attempts are made. Men account for around 80% of suicide deaths, with an age-adjusted rate of 22.7 per 100,000 people as of 2023.

While these statistics are sobering, there is hope. One of the most powerful things individuals can do is learn how to recognize the signs of suicidal thinking and know how to respond. The first step is to ask directly if someone is considering suicide. Many fear that asking the question might “put the idea in their head,” but research shows that asking can actually reduce risk by showing genuine concern and opening a path to support.

It's also important to listen without judgment and offer to simply be there. Allow the person who's struggling to speak openly and express their feelings. Just knowing that someone is willing to listen can be incredibly comforting. If the individual shares specific plans or has access to lethal means—such as large quantities of medication, firearms, or other weapons—it’s critical to help keep them safe by reducing those risks, which might involve removing access to those items or helping them stay in a safer environment.

Another important step is to connect them with resources by encouraging them to reach out to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline or text-based services like the Crisis Text Line (text 741741). After the immediate crisis passes, it’s crucial to follow up. A simple check-in by phone, text, or visit can go a long way in making someone feel valued and less alone.

Conversations about suicide can break through isolation and stigma, giving individuals the opportunity to feel heard and supported. This Suicide Prevention Month, commit to learning the signs, being present, and connecting those in need to the help they deserve. If you or someone you know is in crisis, don’t wait; contact a medical professional immediately or reach out to a trained crisis counselor by texting 741741 calling or texting 988.
